Microneedling: Producing Collagen and Elastin for Better-Looking Skin
The process known as “microneedling” was employed for decades in Europe using a variety of implements, including stamps, rollers and variations of today’s automated pens that make the process quick, consistent and, for the most part, comfortable. However, the public and doctors have only truly embraced it in recent years. Now we’ve learned that this simple action of creating a tiny wound without heat or high technology works remarkably well to improve texture and even skin tone.
How it works
Collagen Induction Therapy (CID) starts by using a pen to create small wounds in the dermis layer. These tiny fissures allow Hyaluronic Acid or our body’s own PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to be absorbed deep into the skin. Micro needling is very effective, increasing our ability to take in these nutrients by nearly 3000%. The procedure triggers our amazing human machines to produce collagen and elastin. The results? Better skin texture, reduced wrinkles, decreased acne scars and smaller pores.
Does it hurt?
The high-speed motor of the pen means the needle penetration occurs very quickly. Most patients say it feels more like sandpaper than a needle prick, or like getting a kiss from a cat! Scar treatments will require longer needles which invade the nerve area and, as a result, produce more feeling.
How much treatment is required?
You will see noticeable results after one treatment, but in general, three to six sessions are recommended to achieve optimal results. Most patients experience redness or a bit of swelling, similar to a sunburn, for 12 to 24 hours after each treatment. Within two short weeks, you will see improvements that will last for three months.
How is this different from laser therapy?
Microneedling breaks up pigment mechanically instead of with light (heat) and redistributes the collagen without heat. When you take the heat out of the equation, you have a safer, more comfortable procedure with a low complication rate.
No heat also means less downtime! You can get the procedure done on a Friday and be back to work on Monday and everyone will think you just got a lot of rest over the weekend.
You are a good candidate for microneedling if you want to improve your appearance and look visibly younger. In addition to brightening the overall look of skin, it has been proven to be effective in combating hair loss and minimizing surgical scars, if those are issues for you. Think of it this way: with microneedling, you are just giving your body a little extra help in doing what it does naturally.
